2004 Annual Meeting

The 54th Annual Meeting was held on February 21st 2004. Despite the rainy weather in the early afternoon, almost everyone who made reservations attended the traditional gathering and luncheon.

At precisely 12 noon, Mr. Charles Martin, President opened the meeting and announced his successor, Dr. Richard Johnson. Mr. Martin had also commented on how great it was to serve as the society's president for a three year tenure. Shortly after that, Dr. Johnson led the members with the Pledge of Allegiance and the invocation.

The next speaker was Mr. Gene Serr from the Conference of California Historical Societies. He mentioned that it was the 50th anniversary of this organization and the important role Colusi County Historical Society plays within this society.

Mr. Keith Wheeler was the next to speak. He informed the membership (jokingly) that members of the Mayflower are buried in local cemeteries in the tri-county. He also pointed out the upcoming project, a dedication of the Slooper Monument at the Tulocay Cemetery in Napa. Mr. Wheeler's ancestors arrived to the United States in a ship known to us as the "Norwegian Mayflower". The tiny Norwegian Sloop Restauration sailed to America in 1825 with the first organized group of Norwegian immigrants since Viking times. After Mr. Wheeler's speech, a wonderful lunch was prepared and served by Methodist Ladies Group.

Next on the agenda was the nomination of our officers and president, Dr. Richard Johnson. The membership unanimously approved them all. Congratulations to our new president, we know he will do a wonderful job.

Our main speaker was Dr. Marvin Locke, a president of Colusi County Historical Society in the past. His topic was the life of a famous aviator, Lester James Maitland. Lester "Les" Maitland had made many aviation milestones before moving to Red Bluff and serving as a priest at an Episcopal Church in Corning. You can read the full story by clicking on the link:

The meeting then came to a close and the membership gave Mr. Martin a standing ovation for a job well done during his three year tenure. Dr. Gene Russell presented Mr. Martin with some books to add to his collection, as well as 2 first class tickets for a ride on the Orland-Newville and Pacific Railroad at the Heritage Trail in Orland, CA.
