One Room School Houses
The one-room rural school houses of the former Colusi County have almost completely disappeared. Long ago as the number of children in a particular area increased to eight or nine, a school house was built and district lines were drawn. Children came to school on foot or horseback. Many schools had facilities to shelter the horses. As the population changed and transportation became more available, districts combined and the children were bused to more central locations. The closed schools were then used for other purposes, moved elsewhere, torn down or left abandoned to weather. |
Black Mountain School This old school house is located on Sites-Lagoda Road, north east of Sites, which is west of the town of Maxwell. This old school house was abandoned many years ago and weathering got the best of it. Sadly, the building is deteriorated and restoration is impossible. It is just a matter of time before the old Black Mountain School House collapses into a pile of lumber. |
The Old Chrome School House was located in the tiny community of Chrome, located between Paskenta and Elk Creek. Chrome still exists today and the population is currently 12. The school house was moved to its present location at Heritage Trail, where it was beautifully restored at the Glenn County Fairgrounds in Orland. |
Glen Valley School This old shool house was originally located between Freshwater and LaGrande Roads. The Building now stands next to the Sacramento Valley Museum (formerly the high school) in Williams. After the school closed, it was brought to its new location to be used as a rugby house. The Museum plans to restore it as it once was, a one room school house. |
