Just read this fascinating web site. I'm a 2nd generation native Californian from a long-time rice-growing family in Glenn County.  My father was Walter Weller (deceased in 1973) and my mother was Madge Wood Weller (deceased in 1983). I graduated from Codora Grammar School, and Princeton High School-1959. Both mom & dad graduated from Princeton High in 1929.  They had many interesting tales to tell regarding Princeton High in those days.  My favorite one is about the fact that Princeton High Band won the national championship for Class B Bands (smaller schools) and when they traveled back east to compete, all the bands were led by John Phillips Souza!  My dad played the clarinet.

The rice farm is still in Glenn County...one mile from the site of Codora School.  It is farmed by my brother, Elwood and his sons, Buck & Bill.  My mom was a teacher and taught at Codora for a couple of years, until she married Walter. She then had to resign, as, in those days, teachers were not allowed to be married!

I look forward to reading more about your site.

Really enjoyed your web site.
Your feature story was interesting and thought I would let you know that the teacher on the 1925 Codora school shown was my mother, Muriel (Stanford) Bernard.  She taught in many schools including Hamilton City, and Princeton.
My grandfather Van Bernard came to Glenn County about 1913 with his wife Mary Ellen and five children, Catherine, Lloyd, Paul, Geneva and Ora. He was elected in 1920 as a State Representative of the 5th Assembly District (Glenn, Tehema, Colusa)in California and reelected in 1926.
Van and Mary Ellen Bernard are buried at the Willows Cemetery.

My grandparents, Billie and Jessie Saxton, owned a ranch in Glenn County in the 1920's.  My father, Roy, his brother, Bob, and sister, Fran, spent their early childhood there.  I came across your website because I found a photogragh labeled  "Sugar Factory  Hamilton City, Cal" and was curious about it.  As a volunteer at the Linn County Historical Museum in Brownsville, OR, I know how much historical photos can be appreciated.  I will enjoy visiting your site again and will send your address on to my Aunt Fran.

Thanks for such a useful site.

I have just found a Wagon Wheels 1965 & 1970 in some family things.  I am the great, great, granddaughter of Caroline and John Henry Pieper. I am from the branch of the family that moved to Oregon and then some to Milton-Freewater, OR.  My Grandfather was Lloyd Martin Piper, son of John Henry Piper and Rachael Laverna Elam.  The book said he was also known as Henry Pieper. My father's name is Lloyd Edwin Piper. I am so delighted to get this further information.  From a letter with the books; it must have been in my grandfather's possession since 1970.  I've been researching my family tree since the 60's; but my step-grandmother that was helping me never said anything about them. I would love to receive any updates on our family. I am putting mine on Family Tree Maker and would share any information I have. I would especially like to go back further in the family. I have that John Henry was called Johann Heinrich Pieper, born in Germany, and his father and mother as Hans Heinrich Pieper and Leina Gotch. I also show in one place that Caroline Peterson was from Denmark and I have her father's name as Morris. I look forward to hearing from someone. Thank you!

I found your site while "surfing". I was suprised and pleased to find you folks are helping to maintain the Colusi/Colusa history.  I was born in Arbuckle in 1932 and moved to Sacramento in 1939.  I was the youngest of eight children born to William Thomas Day and Addie May Neal Day.  My father was active with the Arbuckle I.O.O.F. "Odd Fellows" lodge for many years.  He died in 1936.  Both my parents and some other family members are buried in the Day Family plot at the Arbuckle I.O.O.F. Cemetery.  My grandmother, Sarah Ann Day and my aunt, Sarah Ann Sherer are buried in the Sherer Family Plot located in the College City Cemetery, Colusa County.  My great grandmother Margaret Melissa Fink Smith is buried in the Williams City Cemetery, Williams, Colusa County. My father, his sister Sarah Ann, his mother Sarah Ann Smith Day and my great grandmother Margaret Melissa Fink Smith arrived in Colusa County during the late 1800s. They all were natives of Tennessee and had lived several years in Missouri prior to traveling to California and settling in Colusa County.  I would appreciate any information about the location of the Arbuckle American and Williams Farmer newspaper archives if they exist.

My grandparents, A.W. and Helen Kimball, lived in Williams from about 1895 until 1920, and are buried in the cemetery there. My grandfather was a physician who practiced medicine there. My father and his sisters were all born in Williams. (One of them, who now lives in Oakland, will turn 105 later this month.)
When my father was alive, I used to visit Williams and Colusa rather frequently with him. (we lived in Sacramento then.) However, since his death in 1964, and since I live in Southern California, I have lost all contact with Colusa County. I was pleased to come across your website.

I have lived here in Red Bluff for the past 24 years.  My children are Native Americans, and any time I can find out anything about this town that might peak there interest, and get there little minds to thinking
and just maybe help them decide just what it is they are wanting to do with there lives. I have come to find out there is so much for the children to learn about in this small town.  I was not raised here but have found it a wonderful place to bring up children.
I came across some information yesterday that has peaked my interest and need some help on finding out more about it, it is regarding some tunnels that are supposed to run underground here in Red Bluff.  Do you have any ideas of where I might find this information?  Also do you have any information on a Tribe called the "Miami Tribe" I am having a very hard time finding anything out about them.

IT HAS BEEN MOST INTERESTING READING ABOUT ALL THE FAMILIAR NAMES AND PLACES AND HAS BROUGHT BACK MANY FOND MEMORIES. I CAN REMEMBER AS A KID THEN LIVING IN SACRAMENTO, GOING UP TO COLUSA WITH MY DAD FOR OUR NUMEROUS HUNTING AND FISHING TRIPS THROUGH THE RICE, CORN AND SUGAR BEET FIELDS AND UP AND DOWN THE AMERICAN AND SACRAMENTO RIVER. I AM HOPING TO TRAVEL TO COLUSA SOON WITH MY WIFE TO SEE THE AREA ONCE AGAIN AND MEET THE ALWAYS FRIENDLY PEOPLE. MANY OF THE HICOKS ARE BURIED IN COLUSA'S CEMETERIES NOW. I am a distant member of the Colusi County Historical Society living in Lafayette California. This is a community just over the hill from Oakland and right next door to Walnut Creek.

I am from a family that is much a part of Colusa County. My grandfather, George Leverett, was constable in Arbuckle for many years and my father, Alvah Leverett, was sheriff of Colusa County in the early 1970's. I lived in Arbuckle until about 5 years of age. Returned with my mother, father and brother (Robert) to Arbuckle in the mid 40's. I graduated from Pierce Joint Union Hight School in 1948.

My grandmother, Nellie, worked during the almond and apricot seasons to earn extra money to buy special items for the home. She and my mother, Pauline, cooked for the Arbuckle elementary school during the late 40's to help put me thru college.

I was blessed with three great aunts and many great uncles from my mother's side of the family. Aunt Etta, who in her late years married Mr Uriah Brown, the Colusa attorney; Aunt Goady (Christian)and her husband Henry who was a prominent business man in Arbuckle; and Aunt Grace (Sanders).

Our family was very close to the Harry Meckfessel's as Aunt Etta was Georgia's (Toots) step mother. I remember as a very young lad enjoyed going to their farm just north of Arbuckle. George Ann, Toots's daughter, and I were very close in those early years.

My grandfather, on my mother's side whose name was Charles Paul Class, owned a saloon in Colusa. He is buried in the cemetery in Colusa. My mother, Pauline, was born and raised in Colusa.

I could go one for a much longer time but it is time to stop. I wish I could spend time researching the local newspapers for interesting items about our family. Joyce Dawley of Arbuckle surpises me once in a while with items she comes across during her hours of research.

I would like to hear from anyone who knew my family. As the years pass, those memories of time spent in Colusa County become more precious. It seems strange that there are no living Leveretts in Colusa County now; the last being my Uncle George (Jr) and his wife Reba.

I'm a descendant of Frances Elizabeth Gill who moved with her parents, older brother and 2 younger sisters from Grass Valley, CA in about 1861 to a farm purchased by the family at Grand Island, Colusa County. Her father died in Colusa in January 1862. (I didn't find a gravesite at the graveyard on Grand Island. Is there another in the area?) Frances mar. 2nd James Franklin Wharton. Their daughter was born in Colusa: Mary Alice Wharton in 1879. Their son, William Gill Wharton -- my grandfather -- was born in Fresno. They also had a son Lucien, born in Fresno.
Frances Elizabeth's older brother was John Taylor Gill, who died 1878 in Colusa. Frances' younger sisters were Mary Ellen Gill and Adelaide Blanks Gill.
I've written an historical fiction using John Taylor as a fictional character set in Grass Valley CA in 1854. I wish to do something similar for Frances set in Colusa in the mid- to late 1860's. After that story, I may try to pick up on another family name in the 1870's or 1880's.
I want to find newspapers or other documents that reflect the day-to-day life in Sacramento Valley in the 1860's. How involved, concerned and aware were families about the Civil War and the construction of the trans-continental railroad. Were there any serious floods? How far were families likely to travel? How often? I want to know more about how children went to school and what they learned.
Thank you for your website and any information that can come my way.
Pam
PS: I'll be in the area sometime during the week of October 13-20 this year, 2002.
